There is a dark side to the pursuit of “feeling good” all of the time.

I don’t know about you but in the span of 1 day I can experience every single one of these emotions and many more.

Which makes the human experience so freaking awesome! Emotions give our life texture.

If I only experienced 1 emotion the rest of my life, I think it would feel like only eating 1 food the rest of my life.

But here’s the thing…

Our culture sells us on the idea that we should only feel emotions like happiness and pleasure and comfort.

If those were the only emotions you ever felt, would you really be able to experience the fullness of them without experiencing other emotions like disappointment and sadness?

No.

There is a dark side to the pursuit of “feeling good” all of the time.

=>You stay in your comfort zone.

=>You might use concentrated pleasures (like sugar, alcohol, tv, social media etc) to create a false state of “feeling good” (which, of course, has a massive impact on your health).

=> You deny yourself the experience of being fully human (saying that you should only experience certain emotions is like saying you have organs you don’t really need – they exist for a reason!)

AND…

There is a bright side to allowing and getting wildly curious about the emotions you try to avoid.

=> Your sadness might be telling you how much you cared about something you lost.

=> Your disappointment might be a reminder to you of the things you truly value.

=> Your self-doubt might be telling you about the way you have been choosing to think about yourself and your possibility.

Our ability to experience and regulate our emotional landscape is a vital ingredient to our health story.
